For a long time now birthstones have been associated with zodiac signs, and Aries is not an exception. So, what is Aries birthstone? As you may have guessed, there is more than one. According to an old Spanish Aries birthstones list that we use it is crystal. Other mystics, astrologists and researchers add sardonyx, bloodstone, hematite, diamond, and amethyst to the line of Aries birthstones.

One of the earliest known gemstones with Aries engraving is sardonyx that belonged to a renowned gem virtues researcher Rev. King and is now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The engraving on that crystal had Aries Aries carrying a long caduceus – the same image found on coins of the ancient Greek city of Antioch.

A famous gemologist and gemstone folklore researcher of the early 20th century George Frederick Kunz thinks it is bloodstone. He even wrote a small rhyme about it:

Who on this world of ours his eyes
In Aries opens shall be wise
If always on his hand there lies
A bloodstone.

As the majority of birthstone lists rely on Aaron’s breastplate gem arrangement and based on the fact that Aries is the first sign of zodiac, some researchers believe that Aries birthstone is hematite, especially of a red color. Andreas Balvacensis, the writer from the 17th century, claimed that hematite was made of dragon’s blood and hence it was supposed to be used for stopping the blood flow. Pliny, navy commander and philosopher of the Roman Empire, recommended hematite for healing wounds and bites. In the Middle Ages this Aries zodiac tone was prescribed for headaches.

In ancient Egypt birthstone hematite was used as a pillow for the mummies. Marbodus, the Bishop of Rennes in France, wrote about hematite:

”The Haematite, named by the Greeks from blood,
Benignant Nature formed for mortals’ good.”

According to a renowned 19th century mystic Isidore Kozminsky, another Aries birthstone is the girl’s best friend. You guessed it right – it is indeed a diamond.

Early 20th century author as well as multiple other researchers consider birthstone amethyst to belong to Aries as well.
